Cork Clipper Team Announced in preparation for the arrival of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Kinsale 02- 07 July 2010.

Port of Cork 07-09 July 2010

The arrival of the Clipper Fleet in Kinsale and Cork in July 2010 will be the fleet’s first return to Europe since the Race started in the UK in September 2009. In preparation for the homecoming festivities the Cork Clipper team has been strengthened to ensure their hero’s welcome is celebrated in style.

The sponsors, Fáilte Ireland, Cork County Council and Cork City Council, have appointed Cork-based events company Goldiefish to programme festival events in Kinsale for the weekend of 02 – 04 July. Supporters and crews alike will be treated to an array of entertainment which will include local and national circus acts and musicians, food and craft markets and live music at Kinsale Square before the festival makes it way in a parade of sail to Cork on Wednesday 07July.

For the Cork City Celebrations the sponsors have chosen Maria Moynihan Lee, Festival Director of the Galway Volvo Ocean Race who will work with Trish Murphy, organizer of prestigious Cork events such as Christmas on the Grand Parade and the St Patrick’s Festival. The yachts will be moored at Custom House at the new Cork City pontoons and the Race Village will be located on Albert Quay. A full programme of events is being developed including headline acts on stage, food market and children’s entertainment.

The Clipper Round the World Festival programme will be launched on 25 May when Sir Robin Knox Johnson, (the first man to sail single handed round the world and Clipper Founder) visits Cork to agree final arrangements for the arrival of the fleet.

A team of interns have been recruited to work with Fiona Bolger as the Cork Clipper Communications Team, based in the Fáilte Ireland offices on Grand Parade. The team is charged with building a publicity programme through various social networking media and associated press as well as being on hand for the festival events in July. Further interns including event management positions will be filled as the event approaches.

In conjunction with the Department of Management and Marketing, UCC, Project Director, Fiona Bolger is setting up a research team to monitor and evaluate the economic and media impact of Cork’s sponsorship. The intern group will work on collating all necessary data to produce an impact study which will be available in September 2010.

The Cork Clipper Crew will arrive in San Francisco this weekend and will be welcomed by Cllr Dara Murphy, Lord Mayor of Cork and their new skipper Hannah Jenner. They will train as a team on some of the other Clipper yachts in anticipation of receiving delivery of their Cork yacht in May in Panama.

So for now it’s all hands on deck in all regards.

The Cork Clipper project is funded by Fáilte Ireland, Cork City Council and Cork County Council with the principal objective of promoting Cork as a tourism and business destination around the world. Working alongside Tourism Ireland, Cork will be promoted to consumers, trade and the media in key markets that the race visits. The culmination of the project will be the arrival of the 10 yachts in the Clipper race to Kinsale in July 2010 for 8 days of festivities which will showcase Ireland to a global market. <>
